THE BIRTH OF CENDOL
When we talk about cendol, the first thing will come to our mind is Southeast Asia. Because cendol is popular in Southeast Asia, the country is including Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, East Timor, Vietnam, Thailand and Burma. The word “Cendol” is actually was mentioned in 1932, which is one of the foodstuffs available in Kuala Lumpur as recorded in the Malay concordance project that collect Malay Writings. And there is a popular belief about the name of “cendol” is related to the word jendol , where in reference to the swollen green worm. Basically the origin of cendol is not clear, but this sweet drink is widely spread across Southeast Asia. But people belief cendol originated in Indonesia because the most prevalent and oldest tradition of cendol making can be found in Java. Moreover in Banjarnegara, central Java, dawet, they traditionally served without ice. But then now, people added ice cubes. Means, this might suggest that in Tropical Java, dawet is a traditional sweet dessert drink, which is predates the adoption of refrigeration technology. So this is make possible for other countries, they developed their own recipe, when ice became readily available. So this can be the reason, why cendol is most popular in Malayan port cities, like Malacca and Penang. At that time British refrigerated ship’s technology provide the required ice. And finally cendol where has been declared a Malaysian heritage food by the Malaysian department of National Heritage. This is how the history of cendol began and until now, it’s a famous dessert in Southeast Asia.
